Attempted rape suspect who escaped police custody nabbed

Police today nabbed an attempted rape suspect, who had given police the slip while being taken to Metropolitan Police Circle, Chapagaun, for legal action.

Superintendent of Police Shekhar Khana, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Range, said Bablu Kumar Majhi, 20, an Indian national was arrested from a poultry farm at Mathillo Gotikhel, Mahankal Rural Municipality-7 after 12 hours of his escape from police custody.

A special team of police was mobilised to trace his whereabouts. He used to work as a welder in Mahankal Rural Municipality.

SP Khanal said Area Police Office, Tungun, had arrested Majhi after he allegedly tried to rape a 13-year-old girl in Mahankal on Wednesday. “As we were bringing him to Chapagaun, a mob staged protest and stopped the cops, demanding that he be made public and the suspect managed to escape,” he informed.

However, the locals had alleged that police had helped him escape. They gheraoed the APO to protest against police. They had also vandalised the APO demanding immediate arrest of the escapee. “Majhi has been kept in the custody of Chapagaun-based MPC,” SP Khanal said. Lalitpur District Court has remanded him to seven-day judicial custody for probe.

The heinous crimes of rape and attempted rapes are on the rise despite enforcement of stringent laws against the crime. According to statistics released by Metropolitan Police Office, as many as six cases of rape and eight cases of attempted rape were reported in Kathmandu over the last one-and-a-half months.

Police recorded 186 such cases in the fiscal 2017-18 compared to 136 in 2016-17 and 135 in 2015-16 in Kathmandu.
