Nineteen burglars held in three days

Kathmandu, October 5

Police said they had adopted a new strategy to combat thefts during the festive season.

According to Metropolitan Police Crime Division, as many as 19 burglars were arrested in the past three days from different places of Kathmandu. Reports state that criminals have been making houses and rooms their soft target during office hours when the house owners and tenants leave their abode for day-to-day business. Cases of burglary increase during Dashain and Tihar.

MPCD informed that special teams were deployed in residential areas which looked virtually deserted during Dashain as the majority of people leave for their home districts to celebrate the festival with their family. It is also working in close coordination with anti-theft section of all metropolitan police ranges, while keeping jewellery stores under surveillance to ensure the arrest of thieves.

“Shops at main marketplaces and city areas are also closed for the festival. There is less traffic on the roads and the movement of people is also sparse and criminal elements capitalise on carelessness of the people,” MPCD warned.

Thieves usually make off with cash and saleable goods like gold and electronic gadgets. While the law enforcement agency has made modest gains in the fight against organised crimes such as trade in small arms, extortion, forgery, fraud and kidnapping of late, they have not been able to curb property crime effectively.

Police said they were having a tough time dealing with property crimes.
