Siraha, March 17
The national council meeting of the Alliance for Independent Madhes led by CK Raut started in Lahan, Siraha, today with the playing of the national anthem ‘Sayaun thunga phulka…’, and not the one the party had coined when it advocated separation of Madhes.
The meeting will deliberate on the 11-point agreement that the alliance signed with the government recently and its future policies and strategies. The meeting started at Marwari Sewa Sadan in Lahan Municipality amidst tight security at 12:00 noon.
As many as 200 council members from 22 Tarai districts are participating in the meeting.
One of the participants, Sudipraj Kushwaha, said the first meeting after CK Raut signed the 11-point accord with the government would last for two days. “Decisions taken in the meeting will be made public once the meeting is over,” said Kushwaha.
The meeting holds significance as leaders of the ruling party have expressed their dissatisfaction with the agreement.
Alliance leader Chandan Singh, a close confidant of Raut, told THT that AIM would come up with its policies after the meeting. Asked if Janaabhimat (people’s opinion) used in the 11-point pact meant referendum, Singh said he did not want to discuss the issue at this stage.
“People’s opinion can also mean referendum and even more than that,” he added.
To keep the goings on of the meeting secret, participants have been barred from carrying cell phones. Moreover, each participant has to produce citizenship certificate to attend the gathering.
