Rautahat, May 4
Kin of Nisha Upadhyaya, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her own house last week, organised a press conference in Rautahat district headquarters Gaur today claiming that the Nisha’s death was a murder. They demanded that those involved in the ‘murder’ be booked.
At the press conference organised in Gaur-based Federation of Nepali Journalists, Rautahat chapter office, the deceased’s family accused the police of taking no action in the case even seven days after the incident.
At the press conference, Nisha’s father Rambabu Upadhyaya accused his daughter’s husband and his family for the murder.
“I gave almost everything in dowry — from jewellery, motorbike, TV along with Rs 800,000 in cash by selling a land plot of six kattha — when I gave her hand in marriage, but her husband Bibek murdered her for not getting a bed as demanded,” lamented the father.
“After killing my daughter, they hanged her body to give the impression that it was a suicide,” he added.
Nisha was found hanging from the ceiling of her house in Chandiha, Rajdevi Municipality, last Saturday.
She was married to Bibek Tiwari of the municipality two years ago.
According to Nisha’s parents, they got to know about their daughter’s death from neighbours as her family was preparing to cremate the body without informing them. “Upon being informed about the incident, we reported the incident to the police, but even after seven days of the incident, the police haven’t arrested anyone,” said the bereaved father, seeking justice for his daughter.
Nisha’s father informed that they had sent an FIR through post office after the police refused to cooperate when they met the police in person to file the FIR. “We suspect foul play as the police are also trying to prove that it is a suicide,” said the father.
At the press conference, Nisha’s mother Parwatidevi Upadhyaya sought legal action against those involved in the ‘murder’ of her daughter.
Rautahat District Police Office SP Bhupendra Bahadur Khatri, on his part, clarified that the post-mortem report had ruled out murder.
“As per the post-mortem report, it is a suicide. To verify it further, we have sent for a viscera test and will arrest the persons in question if the test report shows any internal injury,” said SP Khatri.
