Kathmandu, May 4
The US Embassy, in partnership with the Government of Nepal, laid the foundation for construction of Morang Birthing Centre in Biratnagar, Morang district today.
Funded by the US Department of Defence, the birthing centre will be a $1.2 million dollar facility designed to provide much needed maternity services in the area.
According to a press release issued by the embassy, the Koshi Zonal Hospital currently has limited capacity and is thus unable to meet the needs of local citizens.
Morang Birthing Centre will increase access to medical care for maternity patients within the region.
Greater access to maternity services will help decrease infant and adult mortality rates during childbirth and improve neonatal and postpartum health services.
“The people of the United States are pleased to enhance healthcare services in Nepal through this birthing centre.
Once this centre comes into operation we should work on improving the quality of its services. This means we must continue to invest in health workforce of the facility and ensure that it has appropriate in-service training for the staff,”said USAID’s Health Development Officer Monica Villanueva.
Those in attendance included representatives from USAID’s health team and US Embassy’s Indo-PA- COM Augmentation Team; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population Upendra Yadav, State Minister of Health and Population Surendra Kumar Yadav and representatives from Province 1 government and Koshi Zonal Hospital, and security officials.
