Gaighat, May 20
Nepali Congress General Secretary Sashank Koirala today accused the government of trying to seize the rights of civilians.
Speaking at a press meet organised by Nepal Press Union Udayapur in Gaighat, Koirala warned of retaliation in the Parliament if the government did not withdraw the Media Council Bill.
“Government’s intervention in the judiciary and its attempts to curb press freedom prove that it is hell-bent on seizing people’s rights,” Koirala stated. He made it clear that any form of authoritarianism would not be acceptable to his party. Noting that censorship of the media was unacceptable, Koirala said his party would continue fighting for press freedom.
Koirala charged that the government only made tall promises, but did nothing substantial for the development of the country.
