SDBNTC nurse ends hunger strike after agreement

Kathmandu, May 20

A nurse today ended a 10-day hunger strike after the administration of Shahid Dharma Bhakta National Transplant Centre signed a 10-point agreement with nurses yesterday.

Diki Sherpa, a nurse at Shahid Dharma Bhakta National Transplant Centre,  was staging hunger strike on the hospital premises demanding permanent status for contractual nurses in the hospital through internal examination process.

A deal was signed in a meeting held among Executive Director of SDBNTC Pukar Chandra Shrestha, Deputy Chief District Officer Tara Pokharel at District Administration Office, Bhaktapur; president of Nepal Nursing Association, members from Nepal Health Workers Employees Union and nurses of the centre.

After the agreement, Diki ended her hunger strike and other nurses have also withdrawn their sit-in protest.

According to the agreement, the hospital will conduct an examination of technical subjects for its nurses and health workers as part of the process for granting them permanent status.

As per the agreement, the hospital may hire additional staffers through open competition in coordination with the Public Service Commission.

Other points in the agreement include establishing an Intensive Care Unit and Urology department in the hospital, ahead of the technical examination. The Department of Haematology and Cardiology will be established later.

Staffers and health workers who are not able to appear in the examination due to age factor and other causes will have their contract renewed, continuously.

While hiring additional staffers, the Public Service Commission will help the hospital conduct the examination in a fair manner.

In the event that the Public Service Commission doesn’t provide help, a committee to carry out the task will be formed. The Public Service Commission examination will be held in November.

The hospital will provide free health treatment to nurses who were injured during the protest, and release staffers and nurses who were arrested during the protest.
