Lamjung, May 7
The 20th Ghalegaun festival kicked off here today.
In a bid to push the agenda of economic prosperity, preserve the indigenous folk culture and publicise Ghalegun as a smart village, the festival was organised, said Prem Bahadur Ghale, chairperson of Tourism Management Committee, Rural Tourism Ghalegaun.
Ghalegaun lies in the lap of Mount Lamjung and Mount Annapurna in the northern part of Lamjung.
The festival started with the slogan ‘Preservation and promotion of indigenous folk culture; base for the development of rural tourism’.
Among the key attractions of the festival are sight-seeing, exhibition of mythological handicraft products, exhibition of local agro-products, observation of sunrise and sunset.
“We want to execute the national campaign of ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali’ by strengthening the rural economy through promotion of rural tourism”, Gurung added. He further said they have been engaged in the campaign of publicising the entire rural municipality and the campaign was not limited to just Ghalegaun.
It may be noted that the foreign minister level SAARC meeting had declared Ghalegaun a model rural tourism village of the SAARC region by the joint government formed after the success of the People’s Movement in 2006. The efforts for promoting rural tourism since 1999 now has pushed the agenda of making it the first smart city of Nepal.
